‘Everyone would like’ – Newcastle United release statement after sanctioning deadline day exit

Newcastle United right-back Harrison Ashby has joined Queens Park Rangers on a season-long loan…

After initially impressing at Swansea City last season, the 22-year-old suffered multiple muscle injuries in what turned out to be a frustrating campaign. Ashby – a former Scotland international at youth level – is hoping to go again at QPR and realise his yet-to-be-fulfilled potential.

The Magpies signed Ashby from West Ham United for a reported £3million just over 18 months ago but his first-team opportunities have been limited. Anthony Gordon was unveiled alongside the right-back in January last year and has gone on to become a crucial player at St James’ Park.

Eddie Howe confirmed several youngsters would be allowed to leave on loan when grilled by the media this morning. Joe White is also set to join MK Dons for the rest of the season – with a club statement confirming Ashby’s departure.

“Newcastle United defender Harrison Ashby has joined Queens Park Rangers on a season-long loan deal,” an announcement read. “The 22-year-old right-back joined the club in January 2023 from West Ham United and made sixteen appearances in all competitions last season while on loan with Swansea City in the Championship.

“Ashby was with the first-team squad this summer for training camps in Germany and Japan, featuring for 45 minutes against Yokohama F. Marinos, and will now spend the remainder of the campaign in the second tier with QPR. Everyone at the club would like to wish Harrison well for his loan spell.”
