Fulham Make Huge Marco Silva Contract Decision

Marco Silva has been offered a bumper new contract in a bid to keep him at Fulham.

The Whites have made an offer of a three-and-a-half-year deal as a show of commitment to their manager despite a tough season in terms of results.

Talks between boss Silva and the ownership progressed well during the current international break, and it is hoped the Portuguese head coach will soon sign on the dotted line.

Sportextra revealed exclusively last month that Fulham owner Shahid Khan was drawing up plans to tie Silva down to a long-term deal despite a wobbly season.

The Portuguese was targeted by Premier League rivals Tottenham last summer before they swooped for Brentford boss Thomas Frank. Nottingham Forest were also tipped to make a move when they sacked Nuno Espirito Santo in September.

Tough start

Fulham have endured a tough time in the Premier League this season and are currently 15th and just a point above the drop zone.

They have won only one of their previous six league games and face a tough test this weekend when in-form Sunderland visit Craven Cottage in west London.

Silva was also vocal with his frustration at a perceived lack of activity by his bosses in the summer transfer window. Having signed only a reserve keeper in Benjamin Lecomte, they then broke the club transfer record with a £34 million move for Brazilian winger Kevin.

Although the one-time Shakhtar Donetsk player is taking time to adapt to the rigours of English football, Silva is confident the player will become a star for Fulham.

It now remains to be seen whether Silva is ready to commit himself to Fulham for a further three years once this season comes to an end.

His four years in charge of Fulham is already the longest he has ever stayed at one club during his managerial career, which has also taken in Hull City, Everton and Watford.

In spite of erratic form this season, Silva is credited with erasing Fulham’s image as a yo-yo club between the top flight and the Championship.

Last season they finished in 11th place with a record 54 points. They also reached the last eight of the FA Cup. The year before that they lost to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

The new deal on offer is effectively a three-year contract to run on from the one that expires at the end of this season, but the improved terms will kick in after Christmas.
