Fulham not the “final destination” for player insists teammate – Knows why he struggled elsewhere

Fulham is not the “final destination” for Calvin Bassey. That’s at least according to teammate Kenny Tete.

Voetbal Primeur have an interview with him again today. He’s been speaking to the outlet throughout this week.

This time the focus is on his Fulham teammate. Bassey joined Fulham in a €22.5m deal from Ajax in 2023.

He’d endured a miserable year with the Dutch side after joining them for €23m from Rangers in 2022. He had been a key player at Ibrox, impressing under Steven Gerrard’s management.

But he couldn’t find his feet in the Netherlands, with a series of high-profile mistakes and shaky performances leading to regular criticism from fans and pundits alike.

They were happy to move him on, and Fulham snapped him up. That’s proven to be a smart move for them as he’s established himself as a key player in their defence since. Tete is certainly a fan and doesn’t believe Craven Cottage will be the defender’s final destination.

“He’s a tank, a fighter,” he said.

“When he came here, I thought things weren’t looking good at Ajax, but I don’t think Ajax was very good at the time.

“Maybe it just wasn’t the right fit. He’s a perfect fit here. Everyone loves him. Fulham isn’t his final destination.”

Perhaps part of the reason Bassey has managed to settle at Fulham is due to their fanbase. Tete certainly thinks so, admitting they’re a nicer crowd than the one at Ajax anyway.

“It’s very different here,” he added in separate comments.

“Our fans are different; they’re quite classy. At Ajax and Lyon, there was a lot of pressure, and people would wait for the bus if you lost a few times. That doesn’t happen here.”
