The New York Jets are getting set for their Week 3 matchup against the New England Patriots on Thursday Night Football.
They’re also getting set for their third consecutive game without major offseason acquisition Haason Reddick.
The Jets acquired Reddick from the Philadelphia Eagles in April for a conditional 2026 third-round pick. The draft choice would become a second-round pick if Reddick played 67.5 percent of snaps this season and accumulated at least 10 sacks. Both are looking increasingly unlikely.
Reddick is in search of a new contract as he’s in the final season of his three-year, $45 million deal. The Eagles elected to trade him to New York instead of paying him, putting the onus on the Jets to reach a deal with the Pro Bowl pass rusher. They haven’t.
Reddick sat out organized team activities, mandatory minicamp, and the entire preseason. He officially requested a trade out of New York on Aug. 12.
The Jets are yet to trade him, but also haven’t yet offered him the contract extension he’s looking for. Thus, he’s just not playing.
Reddick has accumulated nearly $8 million worth of fines sitting out the first two games of the regular season. As his holdout continues, he took to social media to post a simple yet cryptic message.
“God will always make a way.”
Reddick is one of the best pass rushers in the league, coming off four consecutive seasons with at least 11 sacks. In 2022, he had the best season of his career, securing 16 sacks and five forced fumbles en route to a Pro Bowl nod, Second-Team All-Pro honor, and a top-four finish in the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year award voting.
Reddick was selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. He’s still just 29 years old and is looking to get paid before hitting free agency this offseason.
The Jets just lost one of their best pass rushers, Jermaine Johnson, to a torn Achilles this past weekend. Reddick would be an obvious fit to replace Johnson, but for now, there doesn’t appear to be any changes in his holdout status.
Jets general manager Joe Douglas said back in August that the team would not trade Reddick.
“We have informed Haason that we will not trade him, that he is expected to be here with his teammates, and that he will continue to be fined per the CBA if he does not report,” Douglas said in a statement. “Since the trade discussions back in March, we have been clear, direct, and consistent with our position. Our focus will remain on the guys we have here as we prepare for the regular season.”
At this point, it’s unclear if that stance has changed.
