Head Coach Matt LaFleur Makes Controversial Take About the Wide Receivers

Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur is no stranger to talking to the media. On Tuesday, he met with reports to discuss what is going on so far throughout OTAs before the mandatory mini-camp begins next week.

After that, training camp will not begin until July. Those will be the final preparations for the 2024 season. A lot of roster spots will be up for grabs during training camp.

The Green Bay Packers will have high expectations this season. LaFleur is hoping for another big season by quarterback Jordan Love.

Green Bay Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur Makes Controversial Statement About the Wide Receiver Core

The Packers have one of the deepest wide receiver cores in the NFL. Green Bay is expected to have Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Malik Heath, and Bo Melton make the 53-man roster this season.

Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur told Jason B. Hirschhorn, a PFWA member about not having a true number-one wide receiver on the roster by saying:

“I personally don’t think it matters. If you just look throughout the course of a season ago, and every season’s going to be a little bit different, but all those guys had their moments where they were the leading receiver in a game. I feel really good about the collective unit. The hardest part is we feel so good about them it’s hard to get everybody the amount of touches you’d like to get. But that’s a good problem to have.”

LaFleur is correct that they all stepped last season because there were games where some wide receivers were sidelined due to injury. Many thought Christian Watson would be the top wide receiver last season, but he never proved it.

Jayden Reed was a rookie last season and led the team in receiving yards. He caught 64 passes for 793 yards receiving and eight touchdowns. Reed averaged 12.4 yards per reception and also was targeted 94 times. He was a second-round pick from Michigan State. The Green Bay Packers have had other successful receivers who were drafted in the second-round in the past like Jordy Nelson and Davante Adams.

The Green Bay Packers may have at least one wide receiver go over 1,000 yards receiving this season and maybe two. Watson, Doubs, and Reed will be on the first unit and Wicks, Heath, and Melton will be on the second.
If you had to choose a wide receiver to be the top guy by the end of the season, it would be Jayden Reed. He can line up anywhere on the field.
