Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward has been a key figure in the team’s defensive success, but injuries have once again raised concerns about his availability.
Ward, who played through a shoulder injury in Week 2 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, saw a significant reduction in his workload.
Ward participated in just 11 defensive snaps, far below his usual presence on the field. Following the game, head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed that Ward’s injury was being closely monitored, and his status for Week 3 against the New York Giants remains uncertain.
Despite the limitations, Ward remains optimistic about his condition heading into the Browns’ matchup against New York.
“I’m feeling great,” said Ward. “Ready to get to the game and ready to roll. I feel good, ready to go.”
Ward’s early performances this season have been impactful, nearly intercepting passes from top quarterbacks like Dak Prescott and Trevor Lawrence. However, his injury history continues to raise concerns about his ability to remain on the field consistently.
The latest shoulder issue echoes a similar injury Ward suffered in 2023, which forced him to miss two games. With his durability a question, the Browns have begun exploring additional options to reinforce the secondary.
In an effort to bolster depth, Cleveland worked out former Washington Commanders cornerback Christian Holmes. Holmes has appeared in 30 games across two seasons. He was most recently with the New York Giants during training camp and could offer valuable experience if Ward is sidelined.
As the Browns prepare for their Week 3 matchup against the Giants, Ward’s participation in practice will be pivotal. With three Pro Bowl appearances and a key role in the Browns’ defense, his availability could greatly influence Cleveland’s chances of securing a second straight win.
Should Ward miss time, Greg Newsome and the rest of the Browns secondary will need to step up against a Giants offense looking to bounce back.
