Jake O’Brien has completed his Everton medical as he looks set to become the latest addition to Sean Dyche’s side, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The transfer specialist reported via X on Monday (29 July) that the Irish international is set to put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the Toffees having agreed to exit Lyon during the summer transfer window.
Dyche’s Blues have agreed to a £16.9million fee with the Ligue 1 side for the 23-year-old defender who will become their fifth addition of the transfer window as preparations continue ahead of the start of the Premier League season.
While the deal is never confirmed until the club officially announces the transfer as Everton supporters found out with Arnaut Danjuma, it does seem as though the Blues have managed to get their man and win the race for O’Brien.
Centre-back won’t have been many fans’ priority heading into this transfer window, but with James Tarkowski out in pre-season and Ben Godfrey moving to Atalanta, the Blues’ lack of defensive depth has been exposed.
O’Brien cannot be expected to immediately displace either Jarrad Branthwaite or Tarkowski, but the Irish international has the potential to provide an excellent rotation option for the pair.

He may not have much experience when it comes to Premier League football, but he has been a regular for Lyon over the last couple of years and impressed pundits and supporters alike with his performances in France.
Hopefully, he will be able to make that step into the English game with ease and adapt to Dyche’s style of play.
If nothing else, it is good to see the Toffees win another competitive transfer race to get their hands on a top target.
