The Boston Celtics are in cruise control so far in the 2024 NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks. They are up 2-0 in the series and have looked dominant in each of the first two games versus the Mavs. The job is far from over, though. Dallas remains a dangerous team that the Celtics can’t afford to underestimate.
Boston Celtics head coach sounds off on the importance of the team’s superstar duo
Amid the intensifying drama of the finals is a sub-narrative among fans about who really is the alpha in Boston: Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown?
Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd tried to bring that issue up subtly recently when he said that Brown is Boston’s best player, though, the Celtics smartly did not fall for it. For Boston head coach Joe Mazzulla, both are just important to the team.
“We wouldn’t be here unless those two guys were the cornerstone of our organization,” Mazzulla said of Tatum and Brown ahead of Wednesday’s Game 3 of the finals.

Tatum and Brown are averaging 24.9 points per game in the finals thus far, while Brown is putting up 24.6 points. However, Brown is shooting much more efficiently at a 54.3 field goal percentage. Tatum is only making 42.6 percent of his shot attempts versus the Mavs.
Then again, who leads the Celtics in this series doesn’t matter as much as the team’s common goal to bring home banner no. 18 to Boston.
