Jordan Love Unleashed His Inner Brett Favre Against the Vikings

Jordan Love arrived at Lambeau Field for the Green Bay Packers’ Week 4 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings rocking a Brett Favre jersey. He was honoring the former Packers great after Favre announced that he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Shortly thereafter, Love became the first Packer to throw four TDs and three INTs in a game since, you guessed it, Brett Favre in 1999.

The 25-year-old quarterback had a true Favrian stat line against the Vikings. Love tossed for 389 yards on 54 attempts, with a completion percentage of 59.3%. He threw some reckless interceptions but also made some stellar completions that led to points and big plays. Love was also playing after suffering a knee injury in Week 1.

From playing injured against the Vikings to throwing hero balls and back-breaking interceptions, Love put on a Favre-worthy performance.

The Packers were hurt by Love uncharacteristically attempting to play hero ball against Minnesota. Love threw 11 interceptions last year. Through two games this season, Love has already thrown four.

One of his interceptions was on the receiver. In the second quarter, Love threw a ball intended for Romeo Doubs that tight end Luke Musgrave tipped. After Musgrave tipped it, Doubs accidentally dropped into the hands of Vikings cornerback Shaq Griffin.

Green Bay’s receivers had a rough day. The Packers had many key drops that were not all on Love. Low throws led to incomplete passes all day by his receivers. However, drops also plagued Green Bay’s wideouts. The Packers were also on the losing end of three different coaches’ challenges on completed passes.

Dontayvion Wicks had a particularly rough day. While the stats say he had five receptions for 78 yards and two touchdowns, that doesn’t perfectly summarize his afternoon. Wicks had several drops that stalled the Packers offense and took points off the board. In this clip below, a fourth-down pass from Love hit Wicks in the chest in the end zone and fell to the ground.

Minnesota’s defense also occasionally victimized Love. The linebacker who intercepted this pass, Kamu Grugier-Hill, should have been following Musgrave up the seam but read Love’s eyes and stayed flat to pick this pass off.

Love also had some self-inflicted errors. On first-and-10, Love throws this ball up for Wicks. While Wicks may have run a poor route, it’s not a good look whenever the wide receiver has to turn into a defender.

While Love presented some of Favre’s worst traits, he also channeled No. 4 at his best. Love threw this absolute dart for Jayden Reed to start the comeback down 28-0. It was a perfect ball that only his guy could have got. It was also a stellar play from Reed, who Mossed the defender.

Love was injured coming into the game, and Minnesota’s defenders hit him hard all day. Still, he kept getting up and making play after play. Love helped to dig the Packers into the hole they put themselves in, and Love was key in digging them out – just like Favre.

He put on an injured, gutsy, wild performance against the Vikings, and it looked a lot like Favre in the ‘90s. Love will bounce back. He was just a little too Favre-y this past weekend, and it was not enough to finish the job.

It was a wild ride at Lambeau Field on Sunday. There were lots of interceptions, lots of touchdowns, lots of drama, and lots of heartbreak. It felt like Favre was under center again.
