Sunderland are seeking specialist advice on Romaine Mundle’s hamstring injury, but Regis Le Bris concedes the winger could have played his final game of the season.
Mundle was forced off during the first half of Sunderland’s weekend win at West Brom after suffering a recurrence of the hamstring problem that sidelined him for almost four months between November and March.
The 21-year-old will not feature in tomorrow night’s game at Norwich City, with Sunderland’s medical staff consulting specialists over the extent of the latest problem.
At this stage, the prognosis remains relatively uncertain, but given how long Mundle was out earlier in the season, Le Bris admits there is a chance he could be unavailable for the remainder of the campaign.
“It is a hamstring injury, but we don’t know the timeline yet,” said the Sunderland boss. “We need more advice from specialists, so we will have to wait a little bit.
“Could it be the end of his season? Yes, it’s possible. We will have to make a decision over the situation, but it is not up us really because we need some specific advice to be able to make this decision.”
Eliezer Mayenda replaced Mundle on the left-hand side at the Hawthorns, and the Spaniard is expected to be promoted into the starting line-up at Carrow Road tomorrow night.
Enzo Le Fee replaced Patrick Roberts when he came on in the 71st minute against West Brom, and while the Roma loanee will be considered for a starting spot at Norwich, Le Bris remains keen to err on the side of caution as he gradually reintroduces Le Fee to the fray.
“First of all, we have to protect Enzo,” he said. “The main thing for him is to improve gradually in terms of his shape and his connection with the team.
“We need to make sure he does that without being in a rush. Then, we will see. We still have six games left in this league, so there are many experiences and opportunities to test different options.”
