The Dallas Mavericks have had one of their best offseasons in franchise history as they found a way to make a roster that made the NBA Finals last season even better.
They started the offseason off by trading Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second-round picks and followed that move up by signing Naji Marshall and acquiring Klay Thompson through a six-team sign-and-trade.
Thompson chose the Mavs over the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency, and adding his shooting and championship pedigree to this Dallas roster is poised to make them one of the top teams in the Western Conference next season.
Klay Thompson proves stars want to sign with Mavericks in free agency
The Mavs held an introductory press conference for Thompson, Grimes, and Marshall on Tuesday, and Thompson destroyed a narrative that has been associated with the Mavs for an extremely long time.
Thompson joined the Mavs to get a fresh start, and his other reasons that he joined the team destroyed the narrative from the past that none of the big free agents wanted to sign with Dallas.
Thompson talked about Dallas’ young talent, playstyle, and how they treat their players as reasons that he signed with the Mavericks, and after back-to-back years of signing Kyrie Irving and Thompson, Dallas is clearly turning into a spot that star players want to play in.
Mavs fans have been used to star players using Dallas for leverage in free agency and typically not signing with them, but Thompson and Irving’s decision to stay is slowly changing that narrative for the better.
Thompson could have easily joined the Lakers for more money and stayed in California, and him choosing the Mavs speaks volumes to the organization that Nico Harrison and company are running. Harrison and company have created a completely new culture, and these types of moves ensure that the Mavs will be contending for years to come.
Pairing one of the greatest shooters of all time with Luka Doncic and Irving is going to give opposing teams nightmares, and they have the potential to build a dynasty if their young talent continues to develop. Dereck Lively II looks like he can turn into one of the best bigs in the NBA one day, and many of their other key role players are young as well.
Thompson can’t wait to get to work, and next season is as highly anticipated as ever.
For all the latest buzz on Klay Thompson and the Dallas Mavericks all summer long, stay tuned.
