Lakers hiring JJ Redick could disrupt Mavericks’ pursuit of rumored trade target

The Dallas Mavericks are likely looking for ways to bolster their roster to come back stronger next season. Plenty of rumors have already circulated about the team, including its interest in a blockbuster trade for Portland Trail Blazers forward Jerami Grant.

While Dallas had P.J. Washington and Derrick Jones Jr. manning the starting forward spots by the end of the 2023-24 campaign, it could probably benefit from a versatile player in Grant.

Last season, the veteran recorded 21.0 points per game while shooting 45.1 percent from the field and 40.2 percent from beyond the arc. His ability to play off the catch and handle the ball makes him a great fit next to Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. On defense, he has the length and athleticism to be a disruptive force.

The Mavs might have to move quickly, though, if they are intent on bringing in Grant and the three years (with a player option) remaining on his massive contract. Other organizations have also reportedly expressed interest in the highly sought-after trade target.

Among those who could ruin Dallas’ pursuit of the second-generation hoopster, if it does plan on doing so, is the Los Angeles Lakers. They recently hired JJ Redick in a move that surprised barely anyone.

According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, league sources have heard that Redick had already spent the previous days connecting with the Lakers players to explain his vision and discuss their potential roles. Based on the whispers, the retired sharpshooter looks like he is valuing “positional versatility, 3-point shooting, and playmaking,” all of which Grant possesses.

So, it might not be surprising if Los Angeles is indeed dead set on trading for the former second-round pick. Add to that the fact that he is currently a client of Klutch Sports Group, which is helmed by LeBron James’ agent and longtime friend, Rich Paul; the odds could be stacked against the Mavs in the Jerami Grant sweepstakes.

In some ways, Dallas may already be considered the biggest loser in Redick’s decision to man the sidelines for the Lakers because it significantly increases the likelihood of James staying in Hollywood instead of joining another franchise, such as the Mavs.

However, the organization has an opportunity to sabotage the Purple and Gold’s plan of hiring Mavs assistant coach Jared Dudley. With the possible development on the Grant front, Dallas should definitely look to foil the Lakers’ schemes.
