Lions add a new quarterback, waive Antoine Green amid multiple roster moves

After some injuries in the preseason opener, including one very notable one, the Detroit Lions made some roster moves before they take the practice field Monday evening.

Wide receiver Antoine Green has been waived with an injury designation, and offensive lineman Ike Boettger has been released. In corresponding moves, quarterback Jake Fromm and linebacker Ty Summers have been signed.

Green had been among the competitors for the Lions’ WR3/WR4 roles, then he suffered a concussion/neck injury in the preseason opener against the Giants. If he clears waivers he’ll revert to the Lions’ IR list and be out for the season unless the Lions release him with an injury settlement.

The headliner on the addition side is Fromm. With Hendon Hooker suffering a concussion against the Giants and likely out of practice until at least Friday, the Lions simply need another quarterback besides Nate Sudfeld to navigate Saturday’s preseason game against the Kansas City City Chiefs.

Summers was a 2019 seventh round of the Green Bay Packers out of TCU. He has appeared in 67 games, largely on special teams for the Packers, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New Orleans Saints, and he was just released by the Jaguars over the weekend.

Lions add Jake Fromm to quarterback mix

Fromm, best-remembered for his college career at Georgia, has been an NFL journeyman. He was a fifth-round pick of the Buffalo Bills in the 2020 draft. He made two starts and three total appearances for the New York Giants in 2021, which are the only regular season action of his career thus far. He was most recently with the Washington Commanders last year and the year before, but was released in May. He had a known tryout with the Packers in July.

It might have been nice to see the Lions do something different to add a quarterback. But with the easy expectation Hooker will clear concussion protocol fairly quickly, signing someone who could overtake him as the No. 2 quarterback (it’s certainly isn’t/shouldn’t be Sudfeld) was unlikely.

Fromm perfectly fits the camp/preseason game body the Lions need. But it shouldn’t be out of the question that he overtakes Sudfeld as the No. 3 emergency quarterback stashed on the practice squad to start the season.
