One of the top priorities for the Los Angeles Clippers this offseason is securing Paul George to fresh terms. While the Larry O’Brien trophy has continued to elude the Clippers, George’s partnership with Kawhi Leonard has resulted in one of the best one-two punches in the league whenever they’re on the floor together.
Aside from George’s two-way production, his partnership with Kawhi Leonard is another factor in any potential decision to keep them together. The way George defends Kawhi from harsh criticisms shows how well the two stars work together.
However, the possibility of George leaving for the Philadelphia 76ers is making Steve Ballmer and the rest of the Clippers front office sweat bullets. While the Sixers haven’t performed well in their latest postseason appearance, they have a terrific duo in Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. George joining the team to change the hegemony in the East is a real possibility.
A recent development suggests that their fears are unfounded, though.
The Philadelphia 76ers’ waning interest in Paul George may see him stay with the Los Angeles Clippers
“The Philadelphia 76ers’ interest in pursuing Paul George has significantly waned in recent days, and the franchise is expected to be aggressive elsewhere with its salary cap flexibility and draft capital leading into next week’s NBA Draft,” Charania wrote on Twitter.
It’s understandable why the SIxers are probably looking for other avenues to strengthen their roster. George signed a four-year, $176-million contract with the Clippers, and his player option will see him bag $49 million. While George will likely decline the option, the Sixers will have to offer a contract of similar value if they want to steal George from the Clippers.
However, PG13’s performance last season warrants such money. He averaged 22.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists on 47.1% FG and 41.3% 3FG. It’s tough to find a reliable contributor who can score and defend at George’s level.
Now that the Sixers are reportedly looking elsewhere, now’s the best time for the Los Angeles Clippers to tie him up to fresh terms and extend their championship window.
