The England midfield talent is desperate to leave Old Trafford after finding himself frozen out by manager Ruben Amorim.
United do not intend to sell Mainoo next month
But Old Trafford chiefs believe the academy product can still have a future at the club, so he will be allowed to leave on loan at best.
Napoli are among the clubs interested in Mainoo, and United would prefer not to loan him to another Premier League club.
Mainoo made his senior debut for the club in January 2023 under Erik ten Hag and later became a key member of his team.
The midfielder even scored for United in their FA Cup 2-1 final victory against Manchester City in 2024.
But his minutes have decreased since Amorim took charge over 12 months ago.
Mainoo has made 39 appearances for the Portuguese head coach, but started in only 16 of those matches.
Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro are the go-to midfield pairing for Amorim in his starting XI.
Mainoo does not believe he has a future at his boyhood club amid a lack of game time.
talkSPORT reported in September that Newcastle United are keeping tabs on his situation.
Chelsea have also previously been linked with a move for Mainoo.
Mainoo has earned ten caps for the England national team since he made his debut in March 2024.
He was part of the Three Lions squad for the Euros later in the year, and started in the final against Spain.
However, he has not yet received a call-up under Thomas Tuchel.
Mainoo may therefore need a loan move away from United in order to come into consideration for the 2026 World Cup.
Bayern Munich are another European side who hold interest in a move alongside Napoli.
