Maple Leafs’ Mitch Marner’s Latest Gesture Fuels Speculation About Future

Toronto Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner keeps putting on strong community efforts and building a solid relationship with fans and citizens from Ontario, as he demonstrated once again on August 30.

Marner wrapped up the month by spending Labor Day weekend attending the opening of a new playground at MacTier Public School in MacTier, Ontario, an initiative funded in part by his ‘Marner Assist Foundation.’

“Yesterday we celebrated a new chapter of adventure with the unveiling of MacTier’s newest playground,” the Marner Assist Foundation account wrote on an Instagram post. “With the support of @theshaniatwainfoundation, the playground is officially open for the young and young at heart in the community.

A big thank you to everyone who made this possible – let the fun begin! @itfactorbiz” The event saw many local children donning Leafs jerseys, most of them probably hoping for the relationship to go beyond Marner’s contract expiration next July.

This act has led to widespread speculation among Maple Leafs fans, not just the kids attending the opening, about Marner’s future with the franchise.

Currently entering the final season of his six-year, 65.4 million contract, the 27-year-old winger has yet to sign an extension. The lack of news on this front has left fans and analysts alike wondering about both Marner’s and Toronto’s next move, whether that’s trying to find common ground or looking for an early exit via trade.

“The park looks great, and we’re hoping everyone enjoys it throughout the summers and hot days,” Marner said at the event, via Julian Orlando Chaves of Parry Sound North Star.

“It’s a beautiful day out there, and we hope everyone enjoys us for the rest of the summer and for many summers going forward,” Marner added.

According to Chaves, the Marner Assist Foundation and Shania Twain Foundation “helped the community get the playground after learning that MacTier Public School’s parent council raised $35,000 over the past eight years for the new $99,000 playground.”
