Matt Eberflus Reveals Why The Bears Moved Quickly To Sign D’Andre Swift

The Chicago Bears knew that they needed someone to take pressure off their rookie quarterback’s shoulders.

Their desire to draft Caleb Williams was the worst-kept secret in the league, and they needed to bolster their running game because of that.

That’s why, among all of the many talented running backs that entered free agency this season, they didn’t hesitate to make a run at D’Andre Swift.

When asked about that, HC Matt Eberflus claimed that the former Philadephia Eagle was perfect for them because they needed someone who could be a weapon in the deep part of the field and the short part of the field and get off to the races as well (via Around the NFL):

“Just a weapon back,” Bears head coach Matt Eberflus answered Friday when asked why the team moved so quickly to sign him. “You know we really needed that guy that can really operate on third down and even on first or second down and be a weapon in the deep part of the field and the short part of the field and take it the distance. And he’s got a lot of gas.”

Swift had been great for Nick Sirianni’s team, but they pivoted and wanted to make a splash by signing Saquon Barkley, thus paving the way for him to take his talents to the Windy City.

The Bears should be one of the most improved teams in the league next season.

Besides Swift, they also added an elite veteran wide receiver in Keenan Allen, and expectations are quite high for rookie WR Rome Odunze as well.

They also have Cole Kmet and DJ Moore, and while there are some concerns about their offensive line, Caleb Williams will have plenty of weapons at his disposal, not to mention an ever-improving and dominant defense.

The NFC North Division is tough as nails, but the Bears are ready to make a statement and prove that they can also compete for the pennant and much more.
