Mets broadcast captures wildness of win: ‘From 0-5 to OMG! … A game for the ages’ to reach playoffs

The New York Mets’ playoff-clinching win Monday against the Atlanta Braves was a microcosm of their season — counted out just in time to resurrect themselves, save their season and now reach the playoffs.

Needing to win one game of Monday’s doubleheader against the Braves, the Mets appeared likely to do it in Game 2 after Atlanta held a 3-0 entering the eighth inning. But then the Mets’ bats came alive — thanks to the removal of starter Spencer Schwellenbach — to score six runs … and set the stage for more ninth-inning heroics when the bullpen coughed up the lead and Francisco Lindor launched a two-run home run to pull the Mets ahead 8-7, the final score of the game.

The Mets’ broadcast captured the heroics of Monday’s game best (and you can listen and watch in full here):

Gary Cohen, play-by-play broadcaster: “From 0-5 to OMG! What a ride! The Mets are going to the postseason in 2024! And what an incredible game to clinch with! Down 3-0, up 6-3, down 7-6. Lindor with the home run to put ‘em over the top! Diaz stretched to the max to close it out! And the Mets win it 8-7!”

Keith Hernandez, analyst: “Well, this is a game for the ages in Met history, I’m telling you. Scoreless through seven and they score eight runs …”

Ron Darling, analyst: “You know, Keith, It was Mendoza’s steadiness in May when they were one of the worst teams in the game. He never changed the way he managed this ballclub. He came out of it. They changed the narrative and now they’re a postseason team.”

Cohen: “A phenomenal game to cap what has been an unexpectedly, fun, whimsical season for the New York Mets as they win their 89th game of the year and they will head to either San Diego or Milwaukee tomorrow to start the National League wild-card series.”

After June 2′s game, the Mets were 24-35. On Sept. 30, they are 89-72 and heading to the playoffs as one of baseball’s hottest teams.
