The legend of Jose Iglesias continues to grow.
The veteran infielder has been a breath of fresh air since being recalled from Triple-A Syracuse, providing a nice boost with his tremendous play on both sides of the ball and his momentum changing hit “OMG.”
Iglesias’ single which was released this month has been adopted by the Mets as a rally anthem of sorts and it’s been right at the forefront of their midseason turnaround to get themselves into a playoff spot at the break.
Candelita, as he refers to himself in the music industry, belted out the hit live in front of the Citi Field crowd after a victory and now he’ll have the opportunity to show what he can do on a national stage.
Major League Baseball has invited Iglesias to perform ‘OMG’ live ahead of the Home Run Derby as they continue their All-Star festivities on Monday night at Globe Life Field.
“It’s a unique opportunity and I’m very humble about it,” he said. “I’ve been an All-Star as a player and now I’m getting to be there as a singer, that’s pretty cool, right?”
And Iglesias won’t be the only Met in attendance for the highly-anticipated event, as first baseman Pete Alonso will be competing for the fifth time in his career.
The big man is looking to join Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. as the only two players in MLB history to record three derby titles and Iglesias is confident that ‘OMG’ will bring him some luck.
“Oh one hundred percent,” he said. “One hundred percent, it would be really cool if he did, which I’m pretty sure he’s going to be able to get it done, he’s been there before.”
