The New York Mets have been the best team in Major League Baseball for the first 29 games of the 2025 season. They currently lead baseball in wins and were the first team this season to reach the 20-win mark. They achieved this feat after a 19-5 thrashing of their divisional rival Washington Nationals, to extend their lead in the National League East to 4.5 games over the second-place Philadelphia Phillies.
The Mets have benefited from the best starting rotation so far this season. As a unit, New Yorks rotation is tops in ERA (2.62) and ranks seventh in WHIP (1.21).
OptaSTATS took to X to point out the Mets’ historical dominance.
“The Mets starting pitchers have now allowed 4 or fewer runs in each of their first 29 games to begin the season,” the page revealed. “It’s the longest streak by a National League team to begin a season in the modern era (since 1901).”

Talking to reporters after the Mets made history, Mets starter Griffin Canning explained his mindset on mound.
“I think it’s just a one-pitch-at-a-time mentality,” Canning said (via SNY). “Don’t try and get out of the situation. I think sometimes you can get it too big, so just focusing on executing one pitch at a time.”
In Monday’s win against the Nationals, Canning continued his dominance. He tossed five innings for New York, allowing zero runs and striking out five batters. Canning has helped the Mets to become the best rotation in MLB, and one that has made history in the process.
With a rotation like this, it’s no wonder the Mets have sprinted out to a 20-9 record to begin the season.
