New York Knicks, Tom Thibodeau Agree to Extension

The New York Knicks have turned into one of the best teams in the NBA under head coach Tom Thibodeau. He has not done it alone, as he has been in lockstep with the front office since arriving ahead of the 2020-21 season.

Since taking over the job from Mike Miller, who was interim head coach after David Fizdale was fired, Tom Thibodeau has led the New York Knicks to a lot of success. They have made the postseason in three out of four seasons.

They have made the playoffs in two straight seasons, the first time since 2010-2012 they qualified in consecutive years. He has brought some much-needed stabilization to the sidelines, and his players have bought in 100 percent.

As a result, the New York Knicks have officially rewarded him with a contract extension. The 2024-25 season was set to be the final one on his deal, but that will no longer be the case.

According to NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, a three-year extension was agreed to that will keep Tom Thibodeau under contract through the 2027-28 season. It was a deal that has certainly been earned.

In four seasons as head coach, Tom Thibodeau has led the New York Knicks to a record of 175-143 in the regular season. They are 14-15 in the playoffs, advancing to the Eastern Conference semifinals two years in a row.

Last season, New York went 50-32, earning the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. Many people thought they were the biggest threats to the Boston Celtics, but injuries derailed their postseason dreams.

Months away from the 2024-25 season, there are some people who still believe the Knicks are the Celtics’ biggest threats. The addition of Mikal Bridges gives them two elite 3-and-D players, along with OG Anunoby, to match up against Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

It will be interesting to see how Tom Thibodeau’s lineup shakes out this upcoming season. The New York Knicks are deep in the backcourt and on the wing, but still have some questions to answer in the middle.

But, the front office doesn’t seem too worried about it as they always have an ace in the hole. If there is a coach in the NBA who can get the most out of an unheralded mix of players at the center spot, it is Tom Thibodeau.
