Newcastle agreed a club record fee for a striker to mark a perfect announcement for the UEFA Champions league phase

Newcastle United’s pursuit of a new striker appears to have come to a stunning end as Nick Woltemade closes in on a move.

Woltemade was linked with Newcastle United earlier this summer but the trail appeared to have gone cold.

Now, however, there have been updates. After a summer long pursuit of a new forward, the Stuttgart star appears to be the man the club have decided on.

How this impacts Alexander Isak remains to be seen. Isak wants to leave Newcastle for Liverpool, but it’s long been reported that the club would first need to sign two forwards before letting the Sweden star leave.

Still, for once at least, Isak isn’t the story. Woltemade is and the striker appears to be closing in on a move.

Nick Woltemade set to sign for Newcastle United

According to German football expert Florian Plettenberg on social media platform X, the 23-year-old is bound for St James’ Park.

Plettenberg adds that Newcastle will pay an initial fee of around £73.5million, with a further £4.3million to come in add-ons.

Woltemade is understood to have already said goodbye to his Stuttgart teammates and now looks set to head to Tyneside to complete a medical ahead of a club-record move to Newcastle.

Nick Woltemade has been compared to Lionel Messi

Argentina great Lionel Messi might not be the most obvious comparison for a 6ft 6in centre-forward.

Still, such is Woltemade’s dribbling ability, Stuttgart teammate and club captain Atakan Karazor once suggested the towering striker had similar technique to both Messi and Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala.

Speaking to German outlet RAN in February, he said: “We know what we have in him: We have a two-meter Messi-Musiala! We hope he shows that again on Friday.”

Woltemade scored 12 goals in 17 Bundesliga starts last season and finished top scorer in the U21 European Championships with six goals.

Tino Livramento’s England beat Germany in the final earlier this summer.
