Simon Bird has backed a clean sweep of Northern clubs to be promoted from the Championship this season with Leeds United in the running.
Writing for the Sunday Mirror (page two of pull-out, 6 October) Bird has shared that it’s “ridiculous” Manchester City’s closest Premier League away game is against Newcastle.
This comes after the Whites find themselves fifth in the Championship table, just three points adrift of the league leaders, Sunderland after their 2-2 draw on 4 October.
“The Championship promotion race has a healthy northern bias to it this season,” Bird wrote.
“Sunderland, Burnley, Sheffield United, Leeds, Blackburn and Middlesbrough are all bossing it at the top end of things.
“These lands were once the bedrock of English football. It’s ridiculous that Manchester City is Newcastle’s closest away game.
“I’m backing a clean sweep of northern clubs to come up this season”.
Leeds United should get Championship promotion
Last term was one full of heartbreak for Daniel Farke and his men. The Whites were narrowly defeated in the dying embers of the playoff final and failed to win back their Premier League status at the first time of asking.
This season, however, things have felt a bit different. While their start to the season hasn’t been perfect by any means, their performances against some of the tougher opponents in the league have been stellar.
However, due to the recent injuries to Ethan Ampadu and Bulgaria international Ilia Gruev, Leeds’ quest for the automatic promotion spots has taken a bit of a hit.
The Welshman is set to be out for 10 weeks and Gruev is also expected to be out for an extended period with the midfielder even posting a picture to his Instagram from his hospital bed after his knee surgery.
The West Yorkshire outfit have one of the best teams in the league after their summer of reinforcement and it would be a travesty to not see them in the top two spots once again.
