Newcastle United face legal battle as summer signing announcement placed on hold

Newcastle United are yet to officially announce Rory Finneran despite his claims on social media…

Blackburn Rovers have announced Newcastle United will be taken to a tribunal to decide Rory Finneran’s compensation fee.

The 16-year-old became Rovers’ youngest-ever player last season when he debuted against Cambridge United aged 15. A talented midfielder who has represented the Republic of Ireland at youth level, Finneran announced his move to the Magpies yesterday.

“I would like to say a massive thank you to all the coaches, staff and my teammates at Blackburn over the past eight years at the club for supporting and helping me develop,” he posted on social media. “It has been an amazing journey, from signing at under-8s to making my first team debut.

“I have enjoyed every moment and wish the best for everyone at the club. I felt it was the time for a new challenge and I am very excited for the next step in my career.”

However, silence from Newcastle has evoked confusion about whether he is officially a player. Blackburn have released a club statement wishing him well for the future but confirming a tribunal will decide the compensation package.

The update read: “Rovers can confirm that a tribunal will be required to determine the compensation fee owed to the club for young midfielder Rory Finneran. Rovers had shown Rory a clear pathway to the first team, with him becoming the youngest player in the club’s history when he made his debut against Cambridge United in January aged just 15 years and 312 days.

“The Republic of Ireland youth international had been with the club since the under-8s level. He has now chosen to continue his footballing journey away from Ewood Park and we wish him well in his future career.”

FIFA rules state “solidarity payments are distributed to all clubs that trained the player between his 12th and 23rd birthdays at a proportional rate depending on how long the player was at each club”.
