Newcastle United fans deliver surprise 57% verdict following Eddie Howe’s ‘incredible’ comments

Newcastle United fans have delivered a surprise verdict on who will score more goals this season between Harvey Barnes and Anthony Gordon…

Both Barnes and Gordon currently sit on one goal apiece following strikes against Tottenham Hotspur and Bournemouth respectively. During an injury-hit first season on Tyneside, Barnes netted five goals in all competitions, with four of those coming after being introduced as a substitute.

Gordon, meanwhile, enjoyed a very good first full season as a Magpies player, scoring 12 times in all competitions, form that earned him a maiden call-up to the England senior side and a place in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad. Gordon and Barnes have shown they are goal scoring wingers and with Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson set to play between them, Newcastle United could have a very exciting front-three on their hands this season if everyone can stay fit.

In a poll conducted by the Shields Gazette, Newcastle United fans were asked who they believe would end the season on more goals, Barnes or Gordon? And the results were close, with 57% believing the former Leicester City man will just edge his teammate.

Newcastle United’s win over Spurs at the weekend saw Gordon and Barnes line up in the starting XI for the first time this season. And it was Barnes that would grab the first goal at St James’ Park, finishing Lloyd Kelly’s cross superbly into the far corner past a despairing Guglielmo Vicario.

Speaking about Barnes, Eddie Howe described the winger’s goal scoring record as ‘incredible’: “He has the ability not just finish really well but to take up great positions to score goals. You look at his goal record, it is incredible for a wide player at this level.”

Gordon, meanwhile, was the saviour for Newcastle United a week previous as he netted an equaliser at the Vitality Stadium to secure a point for the Magpies at Bournemouth. Being able to accommodate the pair in the same team will be something Howe is undoubtedly keen to do as the season progresses having seen both players, despite not hitting the heights that their talents possess, already show their worth to the team.
