Newcastle United have confirmed the sale of Alexander Isak to Premier League champions Liverpool for a British record fee.
Isak joined the Magpies in August 2022 from Real Sociedad for a then club-record fee of £63million and in his three seasons made 109 appearances and scored 62 goals, twice helping the club to qualify for the Champions League and win the Carabao Cup.
But in an official statement released by Newcastle, they were in no mood to thank Isak for his efforts – a clear indication of how they feel about his conduct this summer.
Newcastle United issue blunt 37-word statement confirming Alexander Isak to Liverpool
The 25-year-old sat out of Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia and has spent the past month training alone at the club’s Benton training ground.
Isak also refused to play for Newcastle, therefore missing their opening three matches against Aston Villa, Liverpool and Leeds United in which they could only pick up two points.
“Newcastle United can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee,” the read statement. “The Sweden international joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions.”
Liverpool confirm Alexander Isak transfer
“Liverpool FC have completed the transfer of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United,” Liverpool’s statement read. “Isak joins the Premier League champions as their new No.9 on a long-term contract, which he signed on deadline day after successfully passing a medical.
“Sweden striker Isak established himself as one of the Premier League’s leading attackers during his three seasons with Newcastle. Having arrived from Real Sociedad in the summer of 2022, he scored 62 goals in 109 appearances for the St. James’ Park club.
“Isak netted 54 times in 86 Premier League outings for the Magpies, with 23 of those goals coming last season, when he finished second behind Mohamed Salah in the race for the Golden Boot. He is now a teammate of Salah and has set his sights on winning trophies at Anfield.
“Isak began his career with AIK in his homeland before moving to Borussia Dortmund in 2017.
“After a successful loan spell with Dutch side Willem II, he signed for Sociedad in the summer of 2019 and was the competition’s top scorer as Sociedad won the 2019-20 Copa del Rey. To date, he has earned 52 caps for Sweden, scoring 16 goals.”
Alexander Isak’s first words as a Liverpool player
Speaking for the first time as a Liverpool player, Isak said: “I feel amazing.
“It’s been a long journey to get here. But I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for. It’s something I’m proud of and I’m really looking forward to it.
“I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work. I’m looking forward to seeing my teammates and the fans, and getting back out there.
“I think I have a lot to give, I think I have a lot to improve. I’m a striker but I always want to give as much as possible to the team, mainly goals but much more than that as well. I want to win everything. Yeah, [as simple as that].”
