Newcastle United official statement confirms ninth senior departure

Newcastle United have confirmed the departure of another senior player.

Matt Targett has joined North East rivals Middlesbrough for the duration of the 2025-26 campaign. And that could spell the end of his Newcastle career, with the left-back out of contract in 2026.

Targett joined the Magpies on loan from Aston Villa in January 2022 and, after playing a key role in helping the club retain its Premier League status, was signed permanently in the following summer for £15million.

However since then, a mix of injuries and the form of others have limited the 29-year-old to just 31 appearances.

Targett was left out of the squad for the opening two Premier League matches against Aston Villa and Liverpool, with Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento ahead of him in the pecking order, while Dan Burn and Kieran Trippier have also experienced playing at left-back.

Newcastle United confirm Matt Targett’s move to Middlesbrough

“Newcastle United full back Matt Targett has joined Championship side Middlesbrough on loan for the 2025/26 season,” a club statement read.

“The 29-year-old, who has featured 47 times for the Magpies since arriving from Aston Villa in 2022, makes the switch to Teesside in search of regular football after overcoming injury setbacks in recent years.

“He joins a Boro side who have started the season strongly under Rob Edwards and currently occupy second place in the table after winning all three of their opening Championship fixtures.

“Everybody at Newcastle United wishes Matt well during his time at Middlesbrough.”

Newcastle United senior departure count up to nine

Targett becomes the ninth senior player to leave Newcastle this summer.

The Magpies released three players with Callum Wilson joining West Ham United, Isaac Hayden moving to Queens Park Rangers, while Jamal Lewis is still searching for a new club.

Funds have been raised via the sales of Lloyd Kelly and Sean Longstaff, who joined Juventus and Leeds United, respectively for a combined £35million, while Martin Dubravka moved to Burnley but for a nominal fee.

And in terms of loan exits, Joe White is spending the campaign at League One side Leyton Orient, while Odysseas Vlachodimos will do the same at La Liga side Sevilla.
