NFL Makes Stunning Final Decision on $45,000 Fine for Running Back Josh Jacobs

It is safe to say that the two biggest free agent signings the Green Bay Packers made this offseason have worked out as well as they hoped. Safety Xavier McKinney is tied for the NFL lead in interceptions and running back Josh Jacobs is third in the NFL with 762 rushing yards. Jacobs is also third in rushing attempts (158), runs of 20 yards or more (six), and is fifth in rushing yards per game (84.7).

Jacobs, indeed, has been invaluable to the Packers offense, especially when quarterback Jordan Love was down with injuries. In Green Bay’s second game of the season, the first game Love missed with a sprained MCL, Jacobs had 151 rushing yards on 34 carries. When Love went down with a groin injury against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Jacobs shouldered the load, rushing for 127 yards on 25 carries and scored two touchdowns.

But it was in Green Bay’s third game of the season, a contest against the Tennessee Titans, that Jacobs received a massive fine from the NFL.

Green Bay Packers Running Back Josh Jacobs Was Fined Over $45,000 for Lowering His Head

In the game against Tennessee, Jacobs had 14 carries for 43 yards as backup quarterback Malik Willis helped lead the Packers to victory in the second game Love missed. Jacobs was, however, fined for lowering his head on this play (a play on which he was not flagged):

As Pelissero notes, the fine was a whopping $45,020, one of the largest fines in the NFL this year. As a reference, Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch was fined a little over $20,000 for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Bo Melton and flipping off Packers fans on his way off the field.

Jacobs, of course, appealed the fine.

This occurred nearly a month and a half ago, but the NFL has recently made its final decision on Jacobs’ fine:

As one can see, Jacobs’ fine has been rescinded. That is, he does not have to pay it as the league has admitted that it made a mistake in fining him in the first place.
