NFL owners to consider Tom Brady’s Raiders part-ownership deal Tuesday

Tom Brady could join the NFL’s ownership ranks as soon as Tuesday.

The league’s team owners are scheduled to discuss Brady’s proposed deal for part-ownership of the Las Vegas Raiders during their meeting Tuesday in Atlanta and those discussions could lead to an approval vote being taken that day, according to a person familiar with the deliberations.

The deal must be ratified by at least 24 of the 32 owners. It has been pending before the NFL finance committee since last year. But it recently has been progressing toward a prospective approval vote at either next week’s meeting or at the owners’ December meeting in Irving, Texas.

Brady and Tom Wagner, the co-founder of Knighthead Capital Management, are believed to be trying to purchase about 10 percent of the Raiders. The finance committee raised concerns last year about the discounted price that Raiders principal owner Mark Davis was offering to Brady, three people familiar with the deliberations said then.

The seven-time Super Bowl winning quarterback is in his first season as an analyst on Fox’s NFL broadcasts. The NFL informed the owners during an Aug. 27 meeting in Eagan, Minn., that it would impose restrictions on Brady’s access to teams in his Fox broadcasting role, based on concerns among some owners.

He is barred from participating in broadcast production meetings with NFL teams and from being in teams’ facilities to watch their practices or perform other activities. He also could be subject to NFL discipline for criticizing the officials or tampering with players from other teams in his on-air comments, though a person familiar with the matter previously said the league would take a “pragmatic” approach to monitoring Brady’s comments on Fox.

If the deal is approved Tuesday, Brady, 47, would become a part-owner of an NFL franchise about 20 months after announcing in February 2023 that he was retiring as a player for the second time, saying it would be “for good” on that occasion.
