Jalen Brunson of the New York Knicks has received a lot of praise recently because of his latest contract extension.
By taking a smaller deal than expected, Brunson has allowed the Knicks to have more financial flexibility.
Many people see Brunson’s move as accepting a discount to ensure a strong future but Nick Wright doesn’t.
Speaking on his “What’s Wright?” show, Wright said, “I don’t view Jalen Brunson’s deal purely as ‘taking a discount’ if the contract we’re talking about is not actually available to you until you play another year of basketball.”

Brunson’s original contract with the Knicks gave him a four-year, $104 million deal that was eligible for a recent extension.
There is the possibility of a bigger payday in the future but Brunson’s choosing to sign earlier left $113 million on the table.
This move by the player shows that he has a lot of faith in his team and the seasons ahead.
It also shows that he is willing to sacrifice a lot in the present in hopes of what the future will bring.
For the Knicks, this allows them the ability to sign other players and bolster the roster even more.
Wright doesn’t feel it’s appropriate to call this pay cut a “discount” but whatever it’s called, it’s a symbol of a close relationship between Brunson and his team.
Since his arrival, the Knicks have become incredibly relevant again.
They had a great regular season and impressed during the playoffs too.
If it weren’t for some bad injuries, they may have been able to go all the way to the Finals.
The future in New York is bright and it’s even brighter now because of Brunson’s contract decision.
