Nottingham Forest close in on £29m Santiago Gimenez deal

Forest have coveted a proven striker all summer and are hopeful of adding Gimenez after Eddie Nketiah move stalled…

Nottingham Forest are in advanced negotiations with Feyenoord over a £29 million deal for striker Santiago Gimenez.

Forest’s pursuit of a proven centre-forward in this transfer window is close to ending with Gimenez appearing increasingly likely to join the Premier League club later this week.

A Mexico international, Gimenez has featured highly on Forest’s list of targets this summer and the club is now accelerating a move after complications in their bid to sign Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah.

Forest had agreed the framework of a £30m fee with Arsenal for Nketiah towards the end of last week, but it is understood the transfer hit the buffers late on Thursday.

Nketiah still has three years left on his Arsenal contract and settling his departure from the Emirates proved too much of a hurdle. It is also understood that the England international expressed a desire to remain in London.

Forest are now focusing on Gimenez, 23, who has proved a huge success at Feyenoord in the Eredivisie. He has scored 40 goals in 64 appearances for the Dutch club, who were managed by Liverpool’s Arne Slot last season.

Forest hope to wrap up a deal well before their league meeting with Wolves at the City Ground on Saturday. Negotiations between the two clubs are ongoing.

There will also be exits this week, with Emmanuel Dennis, Matt Turner, Josh Bowler and Ui-Jo Hwang free to depart either on loan or permanently.

After Forest’s win at Southampton on Saturday, head coach Nuno Espirito Santo admitted this final week of the transfer window is expected to be lively.

He said: “There are so many things going on in the transfer window – surprise moves from all the teams.

“All the clubs in the Premier League are looking at these final days to get the final details right. As long as we are the same, I will be OK. But let’s see what happens.”
