The Florida Panthers are in the Stanley Cup Final for the third time. The first two, well, didn’t go as planned. Swept by Colorado in 1996. Beaten in five games by Vegas last year.
Edmonton’s last championship in 1990 was its fifth in seven seasons, capping off a dynasty that included all-stars such as Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, Glenn Anderson and Grant Fuhr. Since that time, though, the Oilers have played for the Cup just one time, losing in seven games to the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006.
These two teams will meet in the 2024 Stanley Cup Final, with both teams advancing out of their conference final in six games: The Panthers ousted the Rangers and the Oilers eliminated the Stars.
All of the games will air on ABC, ESPN Deportes, and ESPN+ and be available to live-stream on DirecTV Stream (FREE trial) and fubo TV (FREE trial).
The Panthers are slight favorites, according to BetMGM Sportsbook.
They are led by an offense that’s very deep — 14 forwards in this Cup final with more than 45 points this season, including playoffs, and the Panthers have eight of them — a defense that has amassed a league-low 2.39 goals per game this season, and goalie Sergei Bobrovsky who has one of the best resumes in the sport.
Meanwhile, the Oilers are led by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl who have combined to win four of the last seven MVP awards (three by McDavid), a strong defensive corps led by Gustav Forsling, and an under-the-radar goalie — Stuart Skinner — who has played well all year.
At 2,540 miles between Edmonton and Sunrise, Florida, it’s the longest distance between Stanley Cup Final opponents in NHL history.
