Oliver Glasner confirms whether Marc Guehi will play for Crystal Palace on Saturday as Newcastle aim to strike deal

Newcastle United still do not have a deal in place to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, with the transfer window set to close in one week.

The saga continues, despite hope that Newcastle United were getting closer to signing Marc Guehi.

Talks to sign the 24-year-old have continued this week, and it has been reported that Crystal Palace privately believe that now is the right time to sell Guehi from a financial perspective.

However, that will only happen if Newcastle United agree to meet Crystal Palace’s asking price. They are looking for around £70million, whereas the Magpies’ last offer was worth around £65million.

In the meantime, there is the small matter of the actual football.

Newcastle and Crystal Palace in Premier League action this weekend

Newcastle United face Bournemouth on Sunday, with Emil Krafth due to start at centre-back with Fabian Schar suspended.

His three-match ban has highlighted the need for Newcastle to bring in a player like Guehi before the transfer window closes on August 30th.

As for Crystal Palace, they take on West Ham United at 3pm on Saturday. They will be without Joachim Andersen, who is on course to complete his move to Fulham.

He is swapping Selhurst Park for Craven Cottage, but the Andersen deal does not impact Newcastle’s pursuit of Guehi.

Whether Marc Guehi will play for Crystal Palace

But while it has been confirmed that Andersen will not play against West Ham on Saturday, Guehi will.

That is according to manager Oliver Glasner, who has been asked by Sky Sports News if the centre-back is available to face the Hammers.

“Marc will lead the team as captain tomorrow,” he said.

Glasner was then asked if he expects Guehi to continue being a Crystal Palace player.

“I expect everyone to be a Crystal Palace player until I am told something different. It is always their [the player’s] decision.”

Glasner comments suggest Newcastle deal is still not close

With Guehi set to play for Crystal Palace against West Ham on Saturday, it is a further indication that a deal is not quite as close as Toon fans would hope.

If an agreement was near, there would surely be no chance of Guehi playing this weekend. He would be kept away from the action, with the fear of him picking up an injury before a mega money deal.

But it still appears to be business as usual for Crystal Palace an Guehi, with the England international set to captain them in their first home game of the season. They will be eager to pick up all three points, after losing 2-1 to Brentford last weekend.

As for Newcastle, they will hope that Guehi gets through the game unscathed as they continue to try and strike a club record deal.
