Ovechkin’s first goal came against Columbus: his record-breaker might too

On October 5, 2005, Alex Ovechkin took the first step toward etching his name in history when he scored his first career goal against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Nearly two decades later, the stage is set for him to break one of the greatest records in sports history against the same team when the Capitals visit Columbus on April 12.

Ovechkin needs only three goals to surpass Wayne Gretzky for the all-time NHL record.

Gretzky completed his brilliant career with 894 goals in 1,487 games.

Ovechkin scored his 892nd on Wednesday in a loss at Carolina. He’s played 1,485 career games.

Ovechkin has scored 31 career goals against the Jackets, including five goals when the two teams battled in the first round of the NHL Playoffs in 2018. The Capitals came back to win that series 4-2 after losing the first two games in Washington.

The Capitals play three games before then, so Ovechkin could very well be in a position to break the record in Columbus.
