Why the Packers drafted Jordan Love even when they still had Aaron Rodgers at QB

The past, present and future meet on Sunday night.

It’s the Pittsburgh Steelers and their quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, taking on the Green Bay Packers and their QB, Jordan Love.

Of course, this duo of quarterbacks is forever linked.

The Packers drafted Love with the No. 26 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Rodgers still had three seasons of quarterbacking in Green Bay, including two MVP awards. But the Packers made that pick anyway.

Why did the Packers draft Jordan Love when they had Aaron Rodgers?

Ironically, Green Bay was following the Rodgers development plan by taking Love.

They had drafted Rodgers in the 20s of his draft while they still had Brett Favre, and he had to watch and learn behind a legend.

That’s exactly what they did with Love.

Their first-round QB sat for three years before Rodgers left for the New York Jets.

Then, Love stepped in and looked polished and ready to play.

It’d be hard for him to ascend all the way to Rodgers’ heights, but Love has proven that the wait-and-develop plan can work for quarterbacks.

Rodgers had just played his age-36 season in 2019. It’s not like he was young.

He stayed really good for a few more years, but the Packers knew they needed a successor.

In Love, they got it, and now the pair meet in Week 8 of the 2025 NFL season on Sunday Night Football.
