The Panthers have added a quarterback to the roster, as they head into four straight days of practice ahead of the first pre-season game.
The team signed quarterback Jake Luton, who spent time with the Panthers in 2023. In a corresponding move, the club placed defensive end Kemoko Turay on reserve/injured.
Luton was first drafted by the Jaguars in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL draft. He spent time on the Panthers practice squad twice in 2023 and dressed out for the Panthers in Week 3 versus the Seahawks as Andy Dalton’s backup.
The addition was in response to an Andy Dalton quad injury, suffered earlier this week. Dalton did not practice during Thursday night’s Fan Fest in Clemson, South Carolina. Dave Canales said at that time the club would look to bring in another arm, “for the time being while we don’t have Andy.”
Luton will join starter Bryce Young and rookie Jack Plummer. The latter stepped in for Dalton during Thursday night’s scrimmage, an opportunity that gave coaches a better look at the Louisville quarterback.
“It was good for Jack Plummer to get out there to get those reps,” Canales said, “started off that first possession, missed a couple of open guys just high. Part of the jitters. It’s so good to just see him work through that, settle himself and start making plays.”
The Panthers are back on the practice field this afternoon, and will have one more practice on Tuesday, before heading to New England for their first pre-season game against the Patriots.
