Panthers release a kicker, shore up offensive line

The Panthers have made a move in their kicker competition.

The club waived rookie kicker Harrison Mevis on Sunday. Rookie tackle Tyler Smith (Western Carolina) was signed via free agency.

Mevis was originally signed as an undrafted free agent following April’s draft. The Missouri alum was with the Panthers throughout the offseason, in minicamp, OTAs and the first part of training camp. He kicked the sole field goal in Thursday nights preseason game versus the New England Patriots, a 41-yard field successful attempt.

By waiving Mevis, the Panthers now have one kicker on the roster, veteran Eddy Piñeiro. In his career Piñeiro is 89 percent on field goals, and 91 percent on extra points.

Tyler Smith, a native of Laurinburg, North Carolina, attending school at Western Carolina. He was previously with the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Panthers return to the practice field on Monday, then a brief respite, before a light practice on Wednesday, then welcoming the New York Jets on Thursday for a joint practice.
