The Carolina Panthers still see a future for quarterback Bryce Young, rebuffing trade offers at the deadline and announcing plans for him to retain the starting job.
The former No. 1 overall pick was benched after two losses to start the season, but regained his starting job when veteran Andy Dalton injured his thumb in a car accident.
ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported that the Panthers fielded some calls on Young ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline, but opted to stick by their quarterback.
“I found it interesting that the Colts and Panthers got calls on benched quarterbacks Anthony Richardson and Bryce Young, the fourth and first picks, respectively, in the 2023 draft,” Graziano wrote. “I found it even more interesting that those teams were told ‘no’ — that the Colts and Panthers weren’t ready to give up on their first-round quarterbacks just yet.”
The Panthers also announced that Young will retain the starting job even though Dalton has recovered and is able to play. Head coach Dave Canales announced Wednesday that Young will start against the New York Giants for the team’s game in Munich, Germany, on Sunday.
Canales also shared praise for Young’s first-ever game-winning touchdown drive in Sunday’s 23-22 win over the New Orleans Saints.
“This is about the progress from one week to the next,” Canales said, via ESPN. “I talk about finishing all the time. That’s everything. Finish plays, practice, quarters, halves. Finish games.
“He did a fantastic job of finishing that game the right way, finding a way to win and really battling that way.”
