Phillies activate Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber before series vs. Dodgers

Philadelphia Phillies stars Bryce Harper (left hamstring strain) and Kyle Schwarber (left groin strain) both suffered their injuries late in a 7-4 loss to the Miami Marlins on June 27. Fittingly, both have been activated ahead of Tuesday’s crucial series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Schwarber is leading off and DHing, while Harper is at first base and hitting third Tuesday against Bobby Miller and the Dodgers.

To make room for Harper and Schwarber on the 26-man roster, outfielder David Dahl was designated for assignment, while utility-man Kody Clemens was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Harper was recently selected as the starting first baseman for the NL All-Star team, after winning NL Player of the Month in May and June. Now an eight-time All-Star, Harper was hitting .303 with 20 home runs, 58 RBIs and a .981 OPS before going on the IL.

Schwabrer, a two-time All-Star, wasn’t selected to this year’s midsummer classic. But he’s had a strong season so far, with 17 home runs, 59 RBIs and an NL-leading 59 walks. He’s also hitting .250 after posting a .207 batting average across his first two seasons with the Phillies.

Zack Wheeler will get the ball for the Phillies against Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman and the Dodgers Tuesday, in what will surely be billed as a potential NLCS preview.
