The Premier League have explained why Igor Jesus’ goal for Nottingham Forest against Wolverhampton Wanderers was ruled out.
The Brazilian thought he had bagged his first Premier League goal for the Reds shortly before half-time in the clash at Molineux. He had nodded in an Omari Hutchinson corner to beat Sam Johnstone from close range.
However, there was a lengthy VAR check to decide whether Dan Ndoye was blocking Johnstone from an offside position. Referee Tim Robinson was eventually sent to his monitor and disallowed the goal.
On X, the Premier League Match Centre posted an explanation. It read: “#WOLNFO – 38’ VAR OVERTURN. After VAR review, the referee overturned the on-field decision of goal.
“Referee announcement: ‘After review, [Nottingham Forest] 14 is in an offside position, in line of vision of the goalkeeper. My final decision is no goal and offside, in-direct free kick.’”
With Jesus’ goal ruled out, the teams went in at half-time level at 0-0. It had been a first half low on chances and quality.
Having seen their five-match unbeaten run come to an end at the hands of Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday, the Reds made the trip to the West Midlands eager to bounce back. Head coach Sean Dyche had played down the significance of taking on fellow strugglers Wolves, but Forest knew a win could give them some breathing space at the bottom end of the table.
