The Las Vegas Raiders lost their starting quarterback, Aidan O’Connell, in their Week 7 against the Los Angeles Rams, due to a thumb injury, and he’ll be out longer according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
“Raiders QB Aidan O’Connell is heading to Injured Reserve with a fractured thumb, sources tell me and Mike Garafolo following tests,” Rapoport tweeted on X, formerly Twitter. “O’Connell, who had resumed starting before his injury, is out 4-6 weeks. He has a chance to return the season.”
The next quarterback in line will be Gardner Minshew, who was the starter at the beginning of the season but lost it to O’Connell.
Gardner Minshew back in the fold for Raiders after latest injury
Gardner Minshew will be getting his starting job back after Aidan O’Connell’s injury, and since he has experience with the first team, things should hopefully run smoothly. Minshew was benched against the Denver Broncos after only throwing for 137 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions.
After he got benched, Minshew was very professional and said that he would try to help Aidan O’Connell.
“It is what it is,” Minshew said. “Try to help the team, whatever I can. Try to still be an Aidan’s ear, tell him things I’ve been seeing and keep providing a positive presence on the sideline.
“At the end of the day, no matter what my role [is] on the team. I’m going to try and help the team any way I can. That starts getting back in the building tomorrow and getting back to work.”
The Raiders have had to mix up their team the past couple of weeks due to injuries, and most recently with the departure of Davante Adams. Now, they’ll have to switch quarterbacks again, and it will be a tall task for them in Week 8 against the Kansas City Chiefs.
