The Boston Red Sox were able to retain some all-important minor league pitching depth after the team announced that right-handed journeyman reliever Robert Stock has been outrighted to Triple-A Worcester after being designated for assignment on June 9.
Stock has made two appearances for the Red Sox this season, and most recently pitched 2/3’s of an inning against the New York Yankees on Sunday, allowing two runs on an Aaron Judge home run. He was DFA’d prior to Monday’s series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays.
With Stock back in Worcester and no longer on the team’s 40-man roster, it’s possible he’ll return to Boston’s bullpen later this season should the team require another emergency arm in a pinch.
A veteran with five seasons of MLB experience, Stock previously made 10 appearances with the Red Sox during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. In 12 games with Boston, he owns a record of 0-1 with a 5.63 ERA, and a 2.13 WHIP in 16 innings of work.
In addition to pitching for the Red Sox, the 35-year-old has also had brief stints in the big leagues with the San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs and New York Mets. He spent the 2022 season pitching for the Doosan Bears in the KBO League.
The Red Sox have a scheduled off day on Thursday before the New York Yankees make their first trip to Fenway Park in the 2025 season. The opener of the highly anticipated three-game weekend series can be seen on NESN on Friday at 7:10 p.m. ET.
