Red Sox’s Garrett Crochet Joins Hall Of Famer Pedro Martinez In Record Book

Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet added to his Cy Young Award resume Tuesday with a dominating seven-inning outing against the Los Angeles Angels, striking out 10 without allowing a run.

While Boston lost the game, 3-2 in extra innings, Crochet won a spot in the Red Sox record book.

The left-hander is just the second player in team history to record at least 110 strikeouts while giving up less than 30 runs through his first 17 starts of the season, according to MLB.com’s Andres Soto.

You’ve probably heard of the other guy on the list: Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez, who did it back in 2000.

Crochet leads the majors in strikeouts (125) and innings pitched (109 1/3). He leads American League pitchers with a 3.8 WAR.

“Amazing,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Tuesday, according to Soto. “That’s why we traded for him. That’s why we extended him. And every five days, we feel very comfortable with him on the mound.”

“Crochet had an amazing start, feels like he always does,” Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story said, per Soto. “Anytime we lose after a performance like that, that hurts.”

“We’ve been playing close games,” Crochet said, according to Soto, “but ultimately, we’re just not playing good enough. Obviously, we had a stretch last week and we were riding that high for a little bit. But I think this road trip is a good wake-up call that we need to keep our foot on the gas throughout the whole year.”

With Tuesday’s loss, the Red Sox fell to 40-41, putting them below .500 exactly halfway through the season.

Boston traded for the 26-year-old Crochet in December and signed him to six-year, $170 million contract extension in April.
