Kyle Schwarber hit two home runs, Trea Turner returned to the lineup with two hits, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the San Diego Padres 9-2 on Monday night.
Alec Bohm also contributed with a three-run homer and two singles, while Rafael Marchán had four hits and an RBI. The Phillies amassed 18 hits, including seven for extra bases.
After an extensive road trip that took them to London and back, the NL East leaders were glad to be back home. Schwarber remarked, “It felt like we were on the road for a month. It’s nice to be able to get back home. It’s a good start to the homestand.”
San Diego’s Donovan Solano managed an RBI double, but the Padres struggled, losing their fourth consecutive game and their eighth straight on the road.
Trea Turner returned after missing 38 games due to a strained left hamstring. “I feel really good,” he said before the game. Schwarber, known for his June performances, hit his 60th career homer in June, setting a major league record for the most home runs in June per at-bat.
Schwarber’s first homer, a two-run shot in the third inning off Randy Vásquez, gave the Phillies a 2-0 lead. He added a three-run homer in the sixth off Adrian Morejon, extending Philadelphia’s lead to 8-1.
Cristopher Sánchez (4-3) pitched seven strong innings for the Phillies, allowing one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
