On November 2, before the San Antonio Spurs took on the Minnesota Timberwolves, the organization made a shocking announcement that long-time head coach Gregg Popovich was dealing with a health issue and would not be on the sidelines. Panic swept through the fanbase as the Spurs played game after game without the skipper, and no meaningful update was provided.
On Wednesday, the Spurs finally broke their silence and announced that Coach Pop suffered a mild stroke at the Frost Bank Center earlier this month, but a full recovery is expected.
“The San Antonio Spurs today announced that Head Coach Gregg Popovich has suffered a mild stroke,” said the team in a press release. “The episode occurred on Nov. 2 at the Frost Bank Center. Popovich, who has already started a rehabilitation program, is expected to make a full recovery. At this point, a timeline for his return to the sidelines has not been determined. During this time, the organization is grateful to the extended community for providing privacy and space to the Popovich family.”
While secondary to the overall health and wellness of Popovich and his loved ones, it seems like the Spurs can expect him back at some point this season. Throughout the health scare, the Spurs have been incredibly tight-lipped as prayers and well-wishes flooded in. Players said they had not spoken to Popovich but were aware he was recovering.
The Spurs are expected to be private and patient when providing updates, as the usually-quiet franchise navigates a particularly difficult time.
