Steelers linebacker turns heads with Texas-inspired outfit at training camp arrival

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been known to see some special entrances to training camp in years past.

Antonio Brown flew into Latrobe on a helicopter and landed it on campus. Vince Williams showed up dressed as Stone Cold Steve Austin. Eli Rogers dressed in a hard hat, showing he was ready to work.

On Wednesday, the day’s entrance quickly went to linebacker Elandon Roberts. Decked out in overalls and a cowboy hat, Roberts showed up with a new-look mustache, differing from his beard look.

Roberts, who hails from Port Arthur, Texans, and played college football at the University of Houston, aimed to signify that he is ready to show up to work hard. As he puts it, they wear a hat and overalls in Texas and get right to work.

“In Texas man, you throw that hat on and throw these overalls on and you go to work,” Roberts said. “That’s the whole thing behind it. It’s time to get to work.”

That is nothing new for Roberts. He became the spiritual leader of the team’s defense following multiple injuries that gutted the inside linebacker room last season. Even after suffering a pectoral injury, Roberts continued to play through it. He is looking for the Steelers to show up in 2024 once again with a similar mentality.

“Yeah,” Roberts said. “I feel like everybody’s ready to work. Everybody knows what training camp means. Trying to put it together and go into the season strong.”

The Steelers added Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson to the linebacker room. With Roberts and Cole Holcomb set to return, it looks like this should be the best inside linebacker room the team has boasted in quite some time. Roberts should be a foundational piece of that unit alongside Queen on what is expected to be one of the best defenses in football.
