HOUSTON – On Aug. 13, Rams head coach Sean McVay said they still needed to see more body of work from Stetson Bennett to determine if he would be the backup to Matthew Stafford while Jimmy Garoppolo served his two-game suspension to begin the season. McVay also said they would use all the time available to them to make the decision.
Less than two weeks later, McVay and the coaching staff had seen enough to decide to make Bennett QB2 in Garoppolo’s short-term absence. McVay announced the news on the ABC7 broadcast prior to kickoff of Saturday’s preseason game against the Texans.
“He did a good job,” McVay said postgame. “I think he got a body of work in terms of both of those games going from wire to wire. I think he’s done really well in some of the practice settings. And when you do look at it, you’re obviously very fortunate to have Jimmy that will be coming back on Week 3, but he’s done enough that we feel good about him for those first couple weeks.”
Bennett dressed but did not play Saturday against Houston, as Dresser Winn got all of the reps at quarterback. Bennett finished the preseason completing 41 of 69 pass attempts for 437 yards with two touchdowns against five interceptions while handling all of the snaps at quarterback in each of the first two preseason games.
