Thomas Frank’s managerial history amid Manchester United job links

Thomas Frank has been heavily linked with the Manchester United job but little is known of the Danish manager outside of his time at Brentford.

Erik ten Hag is certainly under pressure as Manchester United manager with the Red Devils sat in 14th place in the Premier League and United’s 0-0 draw against Aston Villa has not eased the pressure on the former Ajax boss.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford to take the reins from the Dutchman with the Bees starting the campaign pretty well as they are sat in 11th place.

United take on Brentford after the October international break and the Danish manager has a chance to show the Old Trafford bosses what they could be getting with Frank.

Clubs Thomas Frank has managed at

*Denmark under 16-19 – 2008-2013
*Brondby IF – 2013-2016
*Brentford – 2018 – present

Denmark U16-19 (2008-2013)

Thomas Frank began his footballing career as an amateur, where he played as a midfielder. After years in the amateur game, Frank was given a chance to impress as a coach for the Danish academy sides.

In 2011, he led the Denmark U17 team to the European U17 Championship finals for the first time in eight years, as they advanced to the semi-finals before losing 2–0 to Germany.

Frank was then promoted to the U19 manager but Denmark did not quality for the European U19 Championship in 2013 but then his big management break came.

Brondby IF (2013-2016)

Frank was named as manager of the Danish Superliga club Brøndby on 10 June 2013, which was his first position in senior football.

In his first two seasons at Brondby, he finished fourth and third in the Danish Superliga which was respectable for the club with FC Copenhagen dominant in the division.

Despite these respectable finishes, Frank resigned on the 9th of March 2016 after receiving criticism from Brondby IF chairman Jan Bech Andersen, under a pseudonym, on an online supporters’ forum.

Brentford FC (2018-present)

His most successful managerial stint to date remains his time in West London with it now being six years since the Dane was appointed manager of the Bees.

Under Frank, the club have achieved promotion to the Premier League in the 2020/21 campaign and have been in England’s top division since then.

Brentford have had some standout results in the division with the Bees’ 4-0 win over United a particular highlight.

Since he became manager of the club, Frank has taken charge of 283 games for the Bees with 122 wins and 64 draws which averages out at 1.52 points per game, with Ten Hag’s average points per match standing at 1.86.

Frank dismissed talk of a move to United during the summer but if the chance came around again, you wonder if the Danish manager would be able to turn the club down.
