The Green Bay Packers have accomplished just about everything that they needed to this offseason. They replaced embattled defensive coordinator Joe Barry with Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley, who has drawn immense praise from several players on defense since the start of OTA’s. They signed free agent running back Josh Jacobs and safety Xavier McKinney while letting go of Aaron Jones, David Bakhtiari, and De’Vondre Campbell.
Green Bay also revamped their safety room, linebacker position, and offensive by focusing on those positions in the 2024 NFL Draft. Now the Packers have just one thing left on their to-do list: extend quarterback Jordan Love.
Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love Has Earned a Contract Extension
When the Packers made the decision to move from Aaron Rodgers last offseason, many doubted that Love would be able to match the future Hall of Famer’s level of production in Green Bay. In his final season with the Packers, Rodgers had a 64.6% completion percentage, 3,695 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, and a 91.1 passer rating.
The Packers went 8-9 and lost their last game of the 2022 season to miss the NFL Playoffs.
In his first season as Green Bay’s starting quarterback, Love had a 64.2% completion percentage, 4,159 passing yards, 32 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a 96.1 passer rating. He led the Packers to a 9-8 record, including wins in seven of their last ten games, and a spot in the NFL Playoffs. Green Bay also upset former head coach Mike McCarthy and the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card Round.
As Love is set to enter his fifth season in the NFL, he is eligible for a contract extension. At this point, it is commonly accepted that his potential new deal will make him one of the highest paid quarterbacks in league history.
While both Love and the Packers have stated that they would like to have an agreement signed by the start of training camp, it has not happened yet. One former NFL quarterback (and Wisconsin resident) is not worried, though.
Tony Romo Thinks the Green Bay Packers and Jordan Love Will Get a Contract Extension Done
According to Jim Owczarski of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, former Dallas Cowboys quarterback (and the pride of Burlington, Wisconsin) Tony Romo was in town to compete in the Wisconsin State Amateur golf tournament. While there, he answered questions from reporters regarding his thoughts on the Jordan Love contract extension.
“It’s gonna get done. No one’s letting a talent of Jordan Love walk. So, I think what he showed at the end of last year was really impressive.
“I think he knows he’s going to be signed. What you do as a quarterback is you let your agent talk. They kind of get through it. If he signs it before the season, great. But your job as an organization is ‘we’re going to get this signed. You know that, we know that, don’t worry about it.’”
Romo, of course, knows a thing or two about the business side of football, having played for Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for his entire career.
While training camp is right around the corner, and while a deal has yet to be signed, more and more people with knowledge of how NFL business works are not concerned.
Jordan Love is going to be the Packers starting quarterback for a long time.
