Tottenham make approach to sign Jacob Ramsey, deal still alive

Tottenham Hotspur have made contact with Aston Villa about a deal for Jacob Ramsey, sources have told Football Insider.

Villa had been willing to listen to offers for the 23-year-old before the June 30th accounts deadline, but despite that date passing, Villa could still be open to selling him.

Spurs have a longstanding interest in the attacking midfielder, who came through the Villa academy from the age of six.

Villa want £50million for Ramsey, which is a fee that Tottenham are reluctant to pay, meaning some negotiating will need to take place if a deal is going to be agreed between the two Premier League sides.

Villa feared a potential profitability and sustainability rules breach for the 2023-24 season, and selling a home-grown player like Ramsey would’ve presented pure profit for the club’s accounts.

Tottenham Hotspur target wasn’t regularly featured last season

Despite Ramsey’s lengthy service to Villa, he only made 21 appearances for the club last season, managing just one goal and two assists.

With only 10 of his outings taking place from the first whistle, Ramsey didn’t have a significant role in Villa’s success, although he did deal with injury problems.

Ramsey’s versatility means he’s also capable of playing on the left side of midfield, which would allow Ange Postecoglou more flexibility if a deal was to be agreed upon.

The Englishman has played 122 games for his boyhood club since debuting in 2019, building plenty of experience for such a young age.

Ramsey is under contract at Villa Park until June 2027, meaning the club are under no real pressure to sell him in this window if they don’t want to.
